Chicago by the Numbers August 2017


World Business Chicago tracks indicators from month to month to gauge the strength of several aspects of Chicago’s economy, including employment in major sectors, residential and office real estate data, price and purchasing indexes, and freight demand.

Key trends include:

  • Air cargo tonnage increased by 15.3%, from 144,449.6 in June 2016 to 166,502.8 in June 2017.
  • Illinois export value increased by 15.0% YOY, from $5.1B in June 2016 to $5.8 in June 2017.
  • The number of patents issued in the City of Chicago increased by 19.4% in July 2017. 148 patents were issued in July 2017, compared to 124 patents in July 2016.
  • The Chicago Business Barometer (Purchasing Managers Index) increased by 5.6% from 55.8 in July 2016 to 58.9 in July 2017.
